Panathinaikos’ biggest league loss since 1979
Panathinaikos’ 4:0 beat down in Thessaloniki to PAOK was the club’s biggest league loss since 1979.
Panathinaikos’ biggest league loss to date dates back to December 30, 1979 when the Trifylli were thrashed 6:0 by Iraklis at the Kaftanzoglio stadium. Then, the Thessaloniki club were led by the legendary Vasilis Hatzipanagis in what was a historic result for the Giraios. The loss remains Panathinaikos’ biggest to date at the professional level.
Thirty eight years later, Panathinaikos fell victim to another blow out defeat at the hands of another club from Thessaloniki. On Sunday, PAOK defeated the Athenian giants 4:0 at the Toumba stadium handing the Prasini their biggest loss in the Greek First Division since that day to forget back in 1979.
It is important to note that PAOK have defeated Panathinaikos with a 4:0 scoreline twice since 1979, however both victories in 1985 and 2017 came in Greek Cup play and not in the Greek First Division.
