Panathinaikos complete Nunes and Zahid transfers
Panathinaikos have completed two transfers this Tuesday, securing the services of both Joao Nunes and Ghayas Zahid.
Firstly, the Athenians confirmed the arrival of Nunes:
“Panathinaikos FC announces the arrival of Portuguese footballer João Aniceto Grandela Nunes. He has signed a three-year contract.”
Nunes, a versatile defender most comfortable playing at centre-back, was available on a free transfer after he left Lechia Gdansk in July.
The 23-year-old Portuguese footballer commented on his transfer to Panathinaikos:
“Everyone is aware of the history which Panathinaikos possess, this is a well-known club across Europe. I couldn’t turn down the opportunity to play here. This is a very competitive league and Panathinaikos have won plenty of trophies. Ever since I had contact with the club, their staff have been excellent with me, and I would like to thank them for that. I want to help the club return to greatness. I always try hard in training and I will do my best for Panathinaikos.”
Nunes spent three years in Poland with Lechia Gdansk after progressing through the Benfica ranks in his native country. He won the 2018/2019 Polish Cup with Lechia.
ZAHID SIGNS ON LOAN FROM APOEL
Panathinaikos then revealed the agreement with APOEL for the loan of Norwegian midfielder Zahid:
“Panathinaikos FC announces the arrival of footballer Ghayas Zahid on loan from APOEL. Panathinaikos holds the right to purchase the player next summer.”
Zahid, 24, shared his emotions after moving from Nicosia to Athens:
“From the very first moment when Panathinaikos showed interest in me, I wanted to come here. Mr. Donis, who brought me to APOEL and gave me a chance to play in the UEFA Champions League, played a large role. Panathinaikos is a big club in Greece and is famous in Europe. It’s an honour for me to wear this shirt and it’s a good opportunity for me to prove that I can play at a higher level. I like to have the ball at my feet.”
Born in Oslo, Norway to Pakistani parents, the talented attacking midfielder began his career with Valerenga and spent a period of time on loan at Ullensaker/Kisa. In August 2017, Zahid was snapped up by APOEL, where he subsequently claimed two Cypriot First Division titles. He made his debut for the senior Norwegian national team on June 6, 2018.
Zahid is under contract at APOEL until 2021.
