Greece’s flag bearers for the EuroLeague playoffs warmed up for their respective playoff campaigns with wins in Friday’s Greek Basket League action.
League leaders Panathinaikos extended their unbeaten start to the season to a remarkable 23-0 as the Trifylli ousted Kolossos 87-63 at the OAKA Olympic Indoor Hall. Despite a back-and-forth opening frame, Panathinaikos went on a 46-24 run from the start of the second quarter through to the end of the third frame to blow the game wide open.
Chris Singleton led Panathinaikos with 14 points in the win, while Nick Calathes continued to showcase his playmaking ability with 10 assists as the Trifylli now look to overcome Real Madrid at home on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Ramon Harris was the scoring leader for Kolossos with 17 points while teammate Keith Wright notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Unfortunately for Kolossos, there was no matching the Panathinaikos attack despite the efforts from Harris and Wright – the Rhodes-based club falling to their eighth straight defeat.
In Friday’s late tip-off, Olympiacos fought off a valiant effort from Panionios to emerge 79-73 victors at Nea Smyrni.
Ioannis Papapetrou led Olympiacos with 16 points, but it was Vassilis Spanoulis who stole headlines as he became the all-time leading scorer in Basket League history as his 13 points on the night help him surpass Nikos Chatzis for the all-time record. Spanoulis will now look to lead his side to victory when the Piraeus giants return to European action against Zalgiris Kaunas on Wednesday night at the Peace & Friendship Stadium.
Panionios, who remain in a relegation battle with a handful of other clubs, gave a good account of themselves despite the defeat as the Panthers kept Olympiacos in check for most of the night.
Dejan Kravic notched a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds for Panionios, while Markeith Cummings also chipped in with 22 points; however, the defeat keeps Panionios on edge as the season inches towards the finish-line.
