Greek Champions Panathinaikos kept their unbeaten start to the Greek Basket League intact with a 68-61 defeat of archrivals Olympiacos on Monday night at OAKA.
Olympiacos let a nine-point lead after the first quarter slip as the Piraeus giants lost to their hated rivals for the third time this season – twice in the Basket League, once in the EuroLeague.
KC Rivers led all scorers with 16 points, while Lukas Lekavicius enjoyed a solid shooting night off the bench with 12 points in the win.
Georgios Printezis led Olympiacos with a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double; however, the Erythrolefki were unable to sort-out their offense in the latter half of the game as scoring woes plagued Yiannis Sfairopoulos men once again.
Olympiacos held a 20-11 after the first quarter at OAKA, but Panathinaikos stormed back in the second quarter to cut the lead to just two points by halftime.
Having notoriously struggled in their road games this season, the second half proved to be no different for Olympiacos as the visitors slowly fell behind with Panathinaikos taking a 50-48 lead into the final frame.
Poor offensive execution by Olympiacos allowed Panathinaikos to pad their lead at the other end of the court, as the Trifylli extended their domestic win streak to 14 games in the Greek top flight.
The loss sees Olympiacos now fall four points behind their archrivals for first place, but Lavrio’s loss on the weekend means Olympiacos remain alone in second spot.
Both sides resume their EuroLeague schedule midweek with Olympiacos hosting Fenerbahce in Piraeus, one day before Panathinaikos travel to Germany to take on Brose Bamberg.
