Taking into account the transfer restrictions placed on the club, the Athenians have been busy snapping up young Greek talent this summer, pouncing to sign 22 year-old striker Nikos Vergos from Olympiacos. After returning to Olympiacos in January from an unsuccessful loan spell at Vasas, Vergos failed to make an impression on new head coach Pedro Martins, something which resulted in the Thrylos cancelling his contract. Vergos has signed a three-year deal with Panathinaikos and the Greens announced his arrival with this statement:
“Panathinaikos FC announces the arrival of Greek striker Nikos Vergos. The 22-year old footballer has signed a three-year contract with our team.”
In his maiden interview as a Panathinaikos player, Vergos expressed his feelings: “This is a new challenge in my career and I will try my best here. Panathinaikos are a huge team and I want to help them achieve.”
Vergos will wear the number 20 at Panathinaikos. Previously, he has played as a loanee at Elche, Real Madrid B and Vasas after progressing through the ranks at Olympiacos.
At the same time, it was revealed that fellow forward Anargyros Kampetsis has also officially penned a three-year contract with Panathinaikos.
In July 2017, 19-year old Kampetsis departed Olympiacos for German giants Borussia Dortmund, scoring three goals in the UEFA Youth League and playing his football with the reserve side. However, after just one season in Germany, Kampetsis is returning to Greece with Panathinaikos and will sport the number 99 on the back of his shirt. Panathinaikos confirmed the transfer on Wednesday evening:
“Panathinaikos FC announces the arrival of Greek striker Anargyros Kampetsis. The 19-year old footballer has signed a three-year contract with our team.”
Kampetsis shared his emotions after putting pen to paper with the Prasini: “I am really happy that I’m returning to Greece, I want to thank Nikos Dabizas and Giorgos Donis for the faith which they’ve shown in me. Panathinaikos is a big and historic club. I promise to do my best in matches and in training sessions to help the team achieve its goals.”
Initially, Kampetsis started his career at AEK Athens, but he quickly moved to Piraeus with Olympiacos and was snapped up by Borussia Dortmund last summer.
