What a match...Panathinaikos prevailed 87-106 in double overtime in Sunday’s Greek Basket League derby against AEK.

It was a real derby in Athens as AEK and Panathinaikos played to thrilling match that went into double overtime. The teams were neck and neck throughout the whole game as big three pointers from McGrath and Panathinaikos’ failure to score from the freethrow line sent the game to overtime at 77-77.

In overtime, AEK came seconds away from the big win, was ahead 84-82, however Calathes grabbed the offensive rebound from Rivers’ missed effort and with six seconds remaining, tied the game up at 84-84.  AEK were unable to score in the final possession of the first overtime and the game was sent to a second period.

It was simply a Panathinaikos show in the second overtime as they went on a 16-0 run to begin the second extra period, putting the game way out of reach for the Enosis. The dominating performance from Panathinaikos, outscored their opponents 22-3, gave them the 87-106 victory as they increased their record to 22-1 in this year’s Basket League. AEK fell to 17-6 for the season while missing a big opportunity to record a derby win.

Singleton had a tremendous game with 22 points and 16 rebounds while Bourousis and Rivers added 18 and 17 points, respectively. AEK’s leading scorer was Mavrokefalidis with 19 points as Ukic and Mavroeidis each scored 12 points.

The match had little significance in the standings with the teams playing for pride and city bragging rights. AEK have secured third place while Panathinaikos sit second in the standings, hoping for an unlikely Olympiacos slip up with 4 games remaining.
