Panionios Miss Out On Top Spot After Lamia Loss
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 6
|Lamia||1 - 0||Panionios|
Panionios missed out on the opportunity to move to the top of the SuperLeague on Monday after slipping to a surprise 1-0 defeat at Lamia, who chalked up their second win of the season.
Marko Blazic scored the only goal of a tightly-contested Matchday 6 affair in the 78th minute, and it was a goal worthy of winning any match.
The 32-year-old Serbian midfielder returned Panionios defender Banana Yaya’s clearance from a corner with interest, beating visiting goalkeeper Matic Kotnik with an exocet missile of a shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Both teams had other chances to score but it was a match where defenses were on top, and any hopes Panionios had of grabbing a late equalizer extinguished with the dismissal of Cameroon Jérôme Guihoata, who was sent for an early bath 10 minutes from full-time after picking up a second yellow card.
The result means Panionios remain in third place, two points behind leaders AEK, and completes a weekend of lost opportunities for the traditional chasing pack of clubs.
With Olympiacos losing on Saturday to Atromitos and slipping down to seventh place, there was a real opportunity for the likes of AEK, PAOK and Panionios to put some daylight between themselves and the reigning champions, who will surely recover their form sooner rather than later.
But AEK and Panionios lost, while PAOK were held to a 1-1 draw at Larissa, which means that Olympiacos are not quite dead and buried yet going into the international break.
