PAOK and Olympiacos’ possible opponents in UCL playoffs
AGONAsport takes a closer look at PAOK and Olympiacos’ possible opponents in the UEFA Champions League playoffs, if the clubs advance past the third qualifying round.
With the second qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League in the books, the field is set for the third qualifying round, which will take place over the next two weeks. However, before a ball is kicked in the third qualifying round, the draw for the Champions League playoffs (the final qualifying round) will take place on Monday, August 5.
Both PAOK and Olympiacos will enter Monday’s draw with both teams competing in the third qualifying round against Ajax and Basaksehir, respectively. The Super League champions surely have a tough task at hand against last year’s Champions League semi-finalists while Olympiacos will play their Turkish counterparts in what is expected to be an extremely even battle.
With the playoff draw scheduled to take place before the end of the third qualifying round, teams are seeded based on the club with the higher coefficient from each pairing in the third qualifying round. Due to Ajax’s higher coefficient total compared to PAOK, the Thessalonikis will piggy-back off of Ajax’s high coefficient and enter the playoff qualifying draw as a seeded side. If PAOK manage to defeat Ajax over the two legs, they will theoretically have a much easier task in the playoffs.
Below are the seedings for the upcoming UEFA Champions League Champions route playoff draw:
PAOK (GRE) / Ajax (NED)
CFR Cluj (ROU) / Celtic (SCO)
Crvena zvezda (SRB) / København (DEN)
GNK Dinamo (CRO) / Ferencváros (HUN)
Young Boys (SUI)
APOEL (CYP) / Qarabağ (AZE)
Slavia Praha (CZE)
Maribor (SVN) / Rosenborg (NOR)
After cruising past Viktoria Plzen in the second qualifying round, Olympiacos will pair up with last year’s Turksih Super Lig runner-ups Basaksehir in the third qualifying round. Olympiacos will be unseeded in the Champions League playoff draw and will surely have a tough task in the playoffs if they eliminate the Turks in the upcoming two-legged dual.
Below are the seedings for the upcoming UEFA Champions League League route playoff draw:
Krasnodar (RUS) / Porto (POR)
Club Brugge (BEL) / Dynamo Kyiv (UKR)
Başakşehir (TUR) / Olympiacos (GRE)
Basel (SUI) / LASK (AUT)
A reminder that Champions League qualifying is split into a Champions route and League route. The Champions route consists of teams that won their respective league title (ex. PAOK) while the League route includes teams that did not win their respective league title (ex. Olympiacos).
