The 31-year old Brazilian travels to Thessaloniki with four years of European football under his belt, having previously played for Metalist Kharkiv and Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine. Azevedo made one appearance in this season’s UEFA Champions League, helping Shakhtar defeat Manchester City at home.

On their official website, PAOK confirmed the deal. “PAOK FC announces the signing of Marcio Azevedo from Shakhtar Donetsk. The Brazilian footballer has agreed a deal with the Dikefalos until the end of the season. Welcome, Marcio!”

Before transferring to Europe in 2013, Azevedo represented Juventude, Fortaleza, Atletico Paranaense and Botafogo in his native Brazil. Azevedo then impressed while playing for Metalist Kharkiv, attracting the interest of the successful Shakhtar Donetsk club in 2014. However, in three years with Shakhtar, Azevedo was restricted to a mere 28 matches due to continuous injury problems. Nevertheless, he won the Ukrainian Premier League, Cup and Super Cup as a Shakhtar player. It’s expected that Azevedo will replace Marin Leovac as PAOK’s main left-back.

Despite Azevedo being PAOK’s maiden transfer this winter, the Thessaloniki club are closing in on signing commanding centre-back Rodrigo Moledo on loan from struggling Panathinaikos. While it’s known that Moledo will rejoin former club Internacional upon the conclusion of this campaign, PAOK are eager to take Moledo for the season’s remaining months. Taking into account that Carlos Zambrano, Leovac and Dorian Leveque are leaving PAOK, head coach Razvan Lucescu is focused on bolstering the defensive line.
