Watch LIVE from AGONAsport: Vidi - PAOK, UEFA Europa League matchday 4 fixture on Thursday, November 8th. Details here.
PAOK got off to a great start, taking a 16-13 lead in the first set. However, the Germans would ultimately edge them 25-27 to take the opening set. PAOK came out strong in the second set, taking an early 8-7 lead. Once again, the Germans wore them down, and in the end took the set comfortably by a score of 17-25.
In the third set, the two teams were neck and neck for the majority of the set. With UV Frankfurt holding a slim 20-21 lead, PAOK desperately needed a late surge in order to win the set. Much to the despair of the home crowd in Thessaloniki, the Germans would win four of the last five points to clinch the set 21-25 and win 0-3 overall.
PAOK now face a nearly impossible task. They will travel to Germany where they will play the return leg on November 13. They will need to win 3-0 away and then go on to win the golden set as well in order to prevail over UV Frankfurt. Although it would take a miracle, it would see PAOK qualify for the Champions League group stages. It should be noted that PAOK took part in the group stages last season, finishing third out of four teams with a 2-4 overall record.
