PAOK sweep not expected to dampen spirits at Promitheas
A sweep at the hands of PAOK in the Consolation Final of the Greek Basket League playoffs isn’t expected to dampen the spirits at Promitheas…
Despite a three-game sweep at the hands of PAOK, Promitheas will reflect on their most recent campaign in the top flight of Greek basketball will with pride in their performances.
Promitheas couldn’t replicate the form that saw the Patras-based club sweep the regular season series with PAOK, despite owning home court advantage in the series thanks to their third-place finish in the regular season.
PAOK would avenge their regular season struggles against Promitheas with three consecutive wins to equal the club’s best finish in the Basket League postseason since the 2014/2015 season.
A narrow 81-79 win for PAOK in game one of the series might have forecasted a tight series between the two clubs, but PAOK were dominant in the three-game set – highlighted by the blowout win in game two of the series in Thessaloniki.
Although the loss ends the season on a sour note for Makis Giatris’ side, Promitheas will take pride in their best-ever finish in the Greek top flight in just their second season in the Basket League.
Back-to-back appearances in the playoffs since clinching promotion to the Greek top flight in 2016 has added excitement to the basketball scene in Patras, which will enjoy a new chapter when the club takes part in its first-ever European campaign next season.
Thanks to a 17-9 record in the regular season, Promitheas will join the likes of PAOK and AEK in the group stage of the Basketball Champions League next season.
