Petev was Omonoia’s second manager this season, having taken over for the struggling Pambos Christodoulou in December. The Nicosia club initially achieved better results, but as of late, have struggled mightily and have lost five consecutive matches. They currently sit in 6th place in the league standings (playoff championships group) and are primed for their worst finish since the 1955-1956 season.
Yet, perhaps most remarkably, the team’s performance doesn’t seem to be the reason for Petev’s removal. Petev was said to have made remarks in the Bulgarian media that have made their way back to Cyprus, making insinuations about certain Omonoia players, most notably longtime midfielder Renato Margaca. The 32-year old player has been with the team so long, he has become a Cypriot citizen and now regularly plays for the Cyprus national team.
In a statement released on their official website, Omonoia said “It has come to our attention the specific statements of the team manager, Ivailo Petev, made in his home country. If indeed the statements are correctly attributed and translated, they leave us shocked and astonished, as many of the reports are simply not true. Additionally, the content of these statements may lead us to take legal action for defamation and/or libel. The Association (Omonoia), will take all the necessary steps to ensure the text is accurate, and place it accordingly. The Association in no way endorses the content of the statements as assigned.”
The Danish Technical Director of the club, 36 year old Jesper Fredberg, figures to finish out the season as the interim manager.
