The Thai businessman flew into Athens and met with Giannis Alafouzos a few days ago, but then on Sunday afternoon he also met technical director Nikos Dabizas. During this meeting the on-field issues surrounding the team were discussed, with the managerial role being on top of the list. The contracts of the playing group and the subsequent financial demands were also examined.
Piempongsant is satisfied with Donis and informed Dabizas to contact the former Panathinaikos midfielder, who is currently in Larissa, to return to Athens and put pen to paper. The contract will be until the end of the 2019-20 season. In this instance, Donis will get the chance to meet Piempongsant and observe his plans and future vision for the club.
It was thought Donis’ request to see his salary rise after the first season may affect the deal but it did not phase the 63 year old Thai. In fact, Piempongsant was keen to lure Donis after consulting Avram Grant and Pini Zahavi in London.
The aforementioned meeting with Alafouzos went very smoothly. The positive climate prompted Alafouzos to state “things went great”, and by “the next few days we will come to end and the shares of Panathinaikos will be transferred”. This is in line with earlier reports of Piempongsant wanting to finalise the deal before the 15th of June.
In other news, the club has recalled young duo Theodoros Mingos and Giorgos Angelopoulos from their respective loans at Kallithea and Ergotelis. Dabizas informed the youngsters that they will be considered for the first team. The Greens have to rely on their youth players due to the transfer ban imposed as a result of failing to obtain a licence to participate in the Championship.
Consequently, they will get the opportunity to participate in pre season preparations, as will 18 year old goalkeeper Nikos Christogiorgos, who signed his first professional contract having progressed through the club’s Academy.
