KC Rivers scored 20 points to steer Panathinaikos back to the win column in the EuroLeague with an 80-72 defeat of AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan at OAKA on Friday night.
With Marcus Denmon not available for Panathinaikos coach Xavi Pascual, it was Rivers who stepped up with his best performance of the season as the Trifylli erased memories of last week’s loss against Zalgiris Kaunas.
Vladimir Micov led the scoring for the Italians, but a 50-34 run in the second and third quarter in favour of Panathinaikos sentenced the Milan club to their fourth straight loss.
Despite arriving in Athens tied for the worst record in the EuroLeague standings, it was Milan who started more brightly as the Italians took a 23-15 lead after the first quarter.
Panathinaikos’ offense would awake in the second half as the Trifylli began to dominate proceedings, with the likes of Rivers and Matt Lojeski leading the Panathinaikos pushback.
Another dominate frame from Panathinaikos in the third quarter would erase the Milan lead for good; much thanks to Nikos Calathes who finished the night with 9 points and 12 assists.
With most of the damage done in the middle two quarters, Panathinaikos ensured their efforts with stand with a shutdown quarter to close-out the game.
The win takes Panathinaikos to 8-4 on the season, good for a tie for third place in the standings with Aegean rivals Fenerbahce – though the Turkish side holds the tiebreaker via points differential.
Milan continue to occupy last place in the league table, with the Italian side’s points differential now the worst of the three bottom clubs.
Milan will look to begin to climb out of the league basement when they host Baskonia Vitoria Gasteiz, while Panathinaikos will look to build on their most recent win when Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv visit the Greek capital.
