Sakkari falls in third round
World number two Ashleigh Barty of Australia beat Greece’s Maria Sakkari 7-5 6-3 in the third round of the 2019 US Open.
Coming into the match, Barty led the head-to-head 3-1, which included two wins over the Greek this year. Barty had beaten Sakkari in the third round of the Australian Open in straight sets, and just two weeks ago in the quarterfinals of Cincinnati in three sets. It must also be noted that Barty had the day off on Thursday, unlike Sakkari, giving the Aussie a slight advantage as she didn’t have to play two days in a row.
In the first set, Barty was able to get an early break and then held serve for a 3-1 lead. However, Sakkari came back to take a 5-4 lead. Despite that, it was the Aussie who claimed the opener, 7-5. Barty was then able to carry this momentum into the second set, which she won 6-3 to book her place in the fourth round.
Barty hit 11 aces throughout the match, whereas Sakkari only hit one. Additionally, Sakkari hit 12 winners and 39 unforced errors, while Barty hit 17 winners and 23 unforced errors. Sakkari is now 0-7 in Grand Slam third round matches.
Later, Sakkari teamed up with Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic for their first round doubles match against the Russian-Kazakh duo of Natela Dzalamidze and Elena Rybakina. The Greek-Aussie pair won 6-7(2) 6-4 7-5. They will now face the German team of Anna-Lena Friedsam and Laura Siegemund in the second round.
