Olympiacos defeated Vouliagmeni 7:11 in game four of the A1 Water Polo League Finals and claimed their seventh straight league title.
Olympiacos’ dominance in Greek water polo continued on Monday. The Erythrolefki defeated Vouliagmeni 7:11 in game four of the A1 Water Polo League Finals to win the series 3:1 and claim their seventh straight league crown. The league title, Olympiacos’ 33rd in club history, also secured another League/Cup double for the Reds.
Vouliagmeni put together a good fight in the opening two games of the series and managed to end Olympiacos’ 163-game winning streak in the league with their game two victory in penalties. It marked Olympiacos’ first loss in the A1 Water Polo League in six years. However, in the final two games of the series, Olympiacos dominated proceedings to record two comfortable victories.
Olympiacos got off to a strong start and with goals from their leading scorers on the day, Fountoulis and Gennidounias, took a 0:2 lead into the second quarter. With the momentum on their side, the visitors outscored their opponents 5-1 in the second period as Gennidounias struck twice to give Olympiacos a commanding 1:7 lead at the half-time break.
Olympiacos’ lead increased to as many as seven, 1:8, before Vouliagmeni responded with two goals to make the score 3:8. A late goal from the visitors ended any hopes of an unlikley Vouliagmeni comeback as Olympiacos held a 3:9 lead into the final quarter. The Reds took their foot off the gas in the final period as the difference was too great for the hosts to make up and Olympiacos claimed their third win of the series with an 7:11 scoreline.
The Greek champions will now turn their attention to the LEN Champions League Final-8 in Hannover, where they will look to defend their European crown. The event will take place from June 6-8.
