Sfairopoulos leads Maccabi Tel Aviv to domestic league title
Ioannis Sfairopoulos’ Maccabi Tel Aviv defeated Maccabi Rishon LeZion to claim the 2019 Israeli Basketball Premier League title.
Ioannis Sfairopoulos celebrated his first title abroad as a head coach, leading Maccabi Tel Aviv to the 2019 Israeli Basketball Premier League title. Sfairopoulos’ men defeated Maccabi Rishon LeZion 89:75 in the final of the Premier League’s Final-4 to win the club’s 53rd domestic league crown and their second in as many years.
Maccabi Tel Aviv got off to a strong start in the first quarter, but Maccabi Rishon LeZion responded in the second quarter to trail by just two points at half-time. Sfairopoulos’ side took control in the second half and marched on to a rather comfortable 89:75 victory in the end.
The Greek boss, who coached Olympiacos from 2014-2018, moved to Israel earlier this year after his predecessor, Neven Spahija, led Maccabi to a disappointing 1-6 start in the EuroLeague.
