A stellar night from Olympiacos on the offensive end gave the Piraeus giants an impressive 80-55 win over Aris at the Nikos Galis Hall on Sunday.
Dimitris Agravanis led all scorers with 12 points, but it was a collective team effort from the Erythrolefki’s perimeter shooters that got the better of an Aris side that struggled to contain Olympiacos’ range.
Olympiacos were expected to have a slight disadvantage following two midweek games in the EuroLeague, but Giannis Sfairopoulos’ men came out firing and raced out to an eight-point lead by the end of the first quarter.
The offensive onslaught from Olympiacos continued in the second frame as the Piraeus outfit increased their lead to 21 points on the back of heavy perimeter shooting from Olympiacos’ guards.
Panagiotis Giannakis tried to get his side back into the game in the third quarter, and the halftime message from the former player-turned-coach might have resonated with his players as the Thessaloniki cut into the Olympiacos lead but only slightly. A 21-17 run in the frame from the home side saw Olympiacos’ lead still sitting at 17 points with just ten minutes remaining in the game.
There would be no heroic upset from Aris in the fourth quarter as Olympiacos only increased their lead up until the final buzzer.
The win moves Olympiacos to 3-1 on the season as the Piraeus giants have won three in a row following an opening week loss to Panathinaikos. Aris, meanwhile, are now 2-2 on the season.
Olympiacos will next turn their attention to the EuroLeague as they put their perfect start to the season on the line against Barcelona in Spain on Friday. Aris also return to European action midweek, as the Autokratoras look to get the better of Telekom Baskets Bonn on Tuesday.
