The end of the international break sees a return to domestic affairs across the globe. In Greece, Matchday 3 of the Super League 1 kicks off this weekend. There are a few matches that certainly do grab the attention including Atromitos - PAOK, Olympiacos - Volos, and Aris - Panathinaikos. Here is a daily breakdown of the matches this weekend:
Atromitos - PAOK
OFI - Panetolikos
Olympiacos - Volos
The action kicks off in Peristeri on Saturday when home side Atromitos welcome defending champions PAOK. Atromitos have endured an indifferent start to their season with an early European exit alongside two draws in their opening two league encounters. They take on a PAOK side who also have had their fair share of continental blues and though they have won both of their Super League games thus far, have not been entirely convincing.
Panetolikos travel down to Crete in the day’s second match. Panetolikos are just one of three sides still without a point and will be looking to grab a result against OFI. The home have made a decent start to the season with four points from their first two matches, including an impressive victory away to Panathinaikos last time out.
It will be a battle of league leaders in Piraeus in Saturday’s late kick-off as Olympiacos host Volos. Olympiacos have enjoyed a super start to their season with two domestic victories in addition to their run to the Champions’ League. They face a promoted Volos side who are the surprise team of the season thus far. Wins versus Panionios and Aris have given Volos an early-season boost as they aim to solidify their top-flight status.
Xanthi - Asteras Tripolis
AEK - Lamia
Panionios - Larisa
Aris - Panathinaikos
Four matches are on tap for Sunday beginning with the early kick-off as Xanthi host Asteras Tripolis. Xanthi are the fourth team on maximum points after two games and will want to make it three from three against Asteras at home. For Asteras, they are without a point and want to get off the mark.
AEK’s revival will be put to the test by visiting Lamia. Nikos Kostenglou is attempting to steady the ship that had gone astray with Miguel Cardoso at the helm. A dramatic victory over Asteras away on Matchday 2 could be vital in turning the season around. Lamia have managed to draw against Atromitos and Panathinaikos in their two league matches.
In Nea Smyrni, Panionios welcome Larisa. With a minus six points deduction, Panionios are up against it in order to stay in the top-flight. Though they haven’t managed any points yet, the good news for Panionios is that they have fought hard in both matches. Larisa narrowly went down to Olympiacos two weeks ago. They will look to add to their single point of the campaign, which came in the first match of the season against Atromitos.
The AGONAsport Match of the Week is Sunday’s late kick-off between Aris and Panathinaikos. Defeat to Volos away cost Savvas Pantelidis his job two weeks ago as Aris have begun the season in below-par fashion. Panathinaikos are not better off. A 3-1 defeat to OFI in their second game means Giorgos Donis and his players have some work to do as the season progresses.
