The commanding 29-year old centre back, who is a crucial figure in the Borussia Dortmund and Greek national team defence, is closing in on a transfer away from the German outfit. Papastathopoulos has long been linked with a summer move, but German media organisation Bild recently reported that solid contact has been made between Dortmund and Arsenal, as the London club aim to strengthen their often shaky back line.
Bild stated that Arsenal are prepared to part with 20 million euros for Papastathopoulos’ services, also revealing information suggesting Arsenal representatives have already entered concrete discussions with Dortmund and spoke with Ethniki Omada head coach Michael Skibbe about the centre-back’s talents.
Interestingly, Konstantinos Farras is the agent of both Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Konstantinos Mavropanos, something which is key given that the latter signed for Arsenal in January. The transfer fee won’t exceed 20 million because of Papastathopoulos’ Dortmund contract which expires next year.
Papastathopoulos has made 28 Bundesliga appearances during the 2017/2018 season, scoring two goals along the way. The Greek defender joined Borussia Dortmund in July 2013 from Werder Bremen.
