Sokratis nets first Arsenal goal during Europa League win
Greek national team defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos scored his first for English outfit Arsenal, setting the Gunners on their way to a comfortable 3:0 victory over Qarabag in the 2018/2019 UEFA Europa League group stage.
Since transferring from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, Papastathopoulos has endured a mixed start to life in the English Premier League, improving after a shaky debut but then receiving a minor injury. Nevertheless, the 30-year old recovered in time for the Europa League duel against Qarabag in Azerbaijan on Thursday, scoring his maiden goal for the Gunners. After just four minutes of play in Baku, the centre-back was left unmarked inside the opposing penalty area, deflecting the ball home after the initial header fell into his path. Papastathopoulos played the full 90 minutes as Arsenal ran out eventual 3:0 winners.
Placed in Group E alongside Qarabag, Sporting Lisbon and Vorskla, Arsenal lead the way with six points and are expected to qualify for the Europa League knockout stage with ease. Papastathopoulos has played in both group matches so far.
