The 29-year old centre-back, who has a year left to run on his Borussia Dortmund contract, is wanted by Arsenal and the London club are eager to get the transfer over the line. According to the BBC in the United Kingdom, Arsenal have offered Dortmund 18 million euros for the Greek’s services and the move could become official at any moment.
Having recently taken the reins as Arsenal head coach, Spaniard Unai Emery is concerned about the defensive problems which the Gunners possess, setting out his plans to purchase highly experienced players for the short term while making younger signings with the future in mind. Papastathopoulos fits the first criteria and Emery sees him as an ideal option for the centre of defence.
If the transfer goes through, Papastathopoulos would join fellow Greek defender Konstantinos Mavropanos on Arsenal’s books. In January, the young Mavropanos moved to the capital outfit from PAS Giannina, earning the trust of former boss Arsene Wenger and participating in handful of Premier League matches.
During the 2017/2018 season, Papastathopoulos made 30 German Bundesliga appearances, scoring two goals along the way. Transfermarkt rates his value at 22 million.
