Vassilis Spanoulis played a key role in Olympiacos’ 79-73 win over Panionios on Friday night as the Greek guard tallied 13 points to help the Erythrolefki overcome Panionios at Nea Smyrni in Greek Basket League action.
While his efforts were certainly valuable to Olympiacos’ league campaign and overall preparations for Wednesday’s EuroLeague playoff opener against Zalgiris Kaunas, Spanoulis also made Greek basketball history by setting a new record.
Needing 9 points to tie Nikos Chatzis for the most points scored in the Greek top flight since the start of the HEBA professional era during in the 1992/1993 season, Spanoulis didn’t take long to make the record his own.
After notching the 9 points necessary to match Chatzis’ record of 5,200 points, Spanoulis went on to score 4 more points en route to setting a new record with 5,204 points.
Spanoulis started the 2017/2018 Greek Basket League season with 5,037 points to his name, and despite a long injury layoff to start the current campaign, Spanoulis was able to quickly surpass Angelos Koronios (5,170 points scored) for second all-time since the HEBA A1 era began.
Speaking to reporters after Friday’s record-setting performance at Nea Smyrni, Spanoulis reflected on his points haul thus far including his most memorable basket to date.
“It’s a recent one. The 3-pointer against Panathinaikos that gave us (Olympiacos) the Championship” Spanoulis proclaimed.
Spanoulis will now look to pad his lead atop the scoring charts while also looking to climb the historical all-time scoring charts dating back to the start of professional basketball in Greece in 1963/1964. The current all-time scoring leader is basketball legend Nick Galis with 12,857 points, which is over double Spanoulis’ current total.
