Just a couple of weeks after Nikos Calathes passed Vassilis Spanoulis for the most assists in a EuroLeague season, the latter has set a new mark of his own for the most assists all-time in the EuroLeague.
Spanoulis notched 8 assists in Olympiacos’ loss to Unicaja Malaga to leapfrog former teammate Dimitrios Diamantidis (1255 assists) for the most all-time in the competition’s 17-year history.
Spanoulis headed into the clash with Malaga needing just 3 assists to tie Diamantidis for the most all-time, and the Greek guard managed to not only tie Diamantidis’ mark, but also surpass the former Panathinaikos legend all in the first quarter.
Spanoulis’ kick-out pass to Vangelis Mantzaris before the latter hit a three-pointer with the clock winding down in the first quarter was the record-setting moment for Spanoulis, who finished the night with a further four assists to finish with 1260 assists to his name ahead of next week’s clash with Zalgiris Kaunas.
Spanoulis (272) also set the EuroLeague record in six games fewer than Diamantidis (278). Spanoulis’ feat improves his average to 4.63 assists, while his per 40-minute average is set at 6.68 assists.
