Stefanidi Named European Athlete of the Year
Greek pole vaulter Ekaterini Stefanidi was awarded the title of European Athlete of the Year in the women’s category. She was determined the winner after all voting results were calculated from the social media vote, the media vote, the Member Federation vote, and the European Athletics Expert Panel vote.
She received her title this past Saturday in Vilnius, Lithuania at the Golden Tracks awards ceremony. It was a well-deserved award for her, as she had a fantastic season. She won the World Championships, European Indoor Championships, Diamond League, broke the Greek national record, and had the world-leading jump for the year.
Stefanidi also became the first Greek to ever receive this award. “I'm particularly happy to be the first Greek athlete to win this award. I believe this is very important for my country and for the young Greek athletes as it shows them that with determination, hard work and good decision making you can achieve anything and be recognized at the highest level,” said Stefanidi.
Stefanidi will now hope to continue her winning ways in the 2018 season, with her biggest competitions being the World Indoor Championships in March in the United Kingdom, and the European Championships in August in Berlin.
