Stefanos stopped in Shanghai semifinals
World number four Daniil Medvedev of Russia defeated Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6(5) 7-5 in the semifinals of the Shanghai Rolex Masters.
Coming into the match, the Russian held a 4-0 head-to-head lead over the Greek. In the first set, neither player was able to break serve, despite Tsitsipas holding three consecutive break points at 4-4. The set was ultimately decided by a tiebreak, in which Medvedev prevailed 7-5.
In the second set, Medvedev went up an early break to take a 2-1 lead. He then served for the match at 5-4, only to be broken by Tsitsipas. Nevertheless, the Russian regrouped to break Tsitsipas back in the next game, before closing out the set 7-5 to book his place in the final. The Russian has now reached his sixth final in his last six tournaments, and his ninth final of the year.
Break point conversions made the difference in this match. Medvedev was two for three on break points, while Tsitsipas was just one for five. Medvedev will now face world number six Alexander Zverev of Germany in Sunday’s final.
