It looked as though Apollon were going to be frustrated against their struggling opponents, but Sardinero stroked the loose ball into the empty net after Omonia goalkeeper Andreas Christodoulou could only parry the initial shot into his path.

Coming off the back of a disappointing loss to Everton in the Europa League, Apollon were eager to prove their worth. Esteban Sachetti tested the palms of the home netminder within the first ten minutes, letting rip with a rising volley. However, it was Omonia who came the closest to an opener in the first half. A low cross from the right flank beat Apollon’s goalkeeper, but neither Matt Derbyshire or Demetris Christofi could connect with a telling touch. With the half entering its final fifteen minutes, Derbyshire was then denied when clean through.

Omonia had a big penalty shout turned down as Derbyshire took a tumble inside the area, but the referee refused to have any of it. Nevertheless, with time beginning to tick by in the second half, Apollon gradually began to increase the intensity. Sachetti was presented with a promising chance at 20 yards out, smacking an instant attempt off target. The match seemed to be petering out, until Sardinero’s last-gasp heroics sealed a vital victory for Apollon.

This triumph has lifted Apollon up to third place in the standings, but they will move down to fourth if the AEL-APOEL game doesn’t end in a draw. Omonia languish in eighth position after two consecutive defeats.
