The dream continues for...bronze
EUROBASKET WOMEN - SEMI-FINALS
|Greece||55 - 77||France|
The Women’s Greek national basketball team put together another great display at the Eurobasket Women tournament, but fell 77-55 to France in the semi-finals. Tomorrow the Ethniki will play Belgium in the third place game with hopes of winning the bronze medal.
After two shocking results against Russia and Turkey in the knockout stages of the Eurobasket Women, the Greek team came up short against a powerful French side in the semi-finals, tasting defeat 77-55. Once again against the odds, the Ethniki put up a great fight as they were well in the game after the first three quarters.
After three even quarters of play, France pulled ahead by seven points (54-47) early in the fourth quarter before an important three pointer from Spirodopoulou brought Greece back within four (54-50). However, two big shots from behind the arch for France gave them a double digit lead (60-50) with just under six minutes to play.
The momentum was on France’s side and the difference was too much for Greece to overcome. France went on a 30-8 run to finish the game and marched on to a 77-55 victory.
Kaltsidou led Greece with 15 points while France played exceptional defense to keep Greece’s star Maltsi to only 9 points. France finished with four players in double digit scoring with Miyem leading the charge with 13 points
Although Greece’s dream for gold comes to an end, tomorrow the national team will play for third place and the bronze medal. The Ethniki is determined to cap off a TREMENDOUS tournament run with their first ever medal in a major competition when they face Belgium (lost to Spain) tomorrow at 7:00 PM local Greek time (12:00 PM).
