The Leading Men of the Greek A1 Basketball League

The A1 Basket League is the highest professional basketball league in Greece and it is ranked as one of the top three basketball leagues in Europe, indicating the quality of basketball play. Panathinaikos have won more championships than any other team in the Greek A1 Basket League and they are one of just two teams that have never been relegated to the Greek A2 Basket League.

Papagiannis, Georgios

At just 22 years of age and towering in at 217 cm, Papagiannis Georgios is one of the star players on the team. He holds the centre position and has helped Panathinaikos win the Greek National Cup in 2016 and in 2019. He has recently returned to Panathinaikos for the 2018-2019 seasons after playing for the Portland Trail Blazers.

Vougioukas, Ian

Vougioukas Ian shares the centre position with Papagiannis Georgios in Panathinaikos and at 34 years of age a veteran in the sport. He helped the team to victory in 2011 where they won the EuroLeague. He participated in the 2010 and 2014 World Championships and is currently a member of the Greek National Team. He has previously played in Turkey, Germany, Lithuania and Russia, but moved back to Greece in 2017 when he was signed again by Panathinaikos. This year, everybody expect a lot from him, as his experience may help Panathinaikos to win once more this year’s Greek cup and why not also the EuroLeague? Pappas, Nikos

Nikos Pappas has played for Panathinaikos as a point guard since 2013 and he is a member of the Greek National Team and played in the 2018 Greek All Star Game in 2018. He was a member of the Greek U-16, U-18, U-19 and U-20 National Team and he won the Greek National Cup with Panathinaikos in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Papapetrou, Ioannis

Ioannis Papapetrou was a member of the Greek U-16, U-18 and U-20 National Team previously and has played as a forward for Panathinaikos since 2018. He played high school basketball in the US at the Florida Air academy and college basketball at the University of Texas. He returned to Greece in 2013 when he was signed by Olympiacos Piraeus where he played up until 2018.

Papagiannis, Georgios

Georgios Papagiannis is a member of the Greek National Team and helped Panathinaikos win the 2016 and 2019 Greek National Cup and was previously a member of the Greek U-16, U-17, U-18 and U-19 National Team. He played for both the Sacramento Kings and the Reno Bighorns in the 2016-2017 seasons and after a small stop at the Portland Trail Blazers, he returned to Greece when he was signed again by Panathinaikos Athens

Kalaitzakis, Georgios

Georgios Kalaitzakis is just 16 years of age and plays point guard at Panathinaikos.  He has played for the team since he was signed in 2015. He won the 2017-2018 Greek National Championship and the 2019 Greek National Cup with Panathinaikos. He was previously a member of the Greek U-16, U-18 and U20 National Team.
