The rapid rise of Volos NFC
Volos NFC have stolen the headlines in the Football League after earning consecutive promotions to the Super League despite housing just two years of existence.
Formed only 21 months ago, newcomers Volos NFC will be the newest club in the Greek Super League next season after running away with the Football League. The Thessaly club was formed in June 2017 and has celebrated back-to-back promotions in their two seasons of existence.
Volos New Football Club (NFC) replaced the position of Pydna Kitros, a club which it absorbed, in Gamma Ethniki (Greece’s third tier). They began by making a series of notable acquisitions to bolster the squad and topped Group 4 of the Division and then went on to finish second (behind Iraklis) in Group 1 of the promotion play-offs.
This led to promotion to the Football League (Greece’s second tier) in only their second season. Once again, they had assembled a strong squad and were touted as one of the favourites for promotion to the top flight with Iraklis and Kerkyra. However, the other two sides have experienced several issues and it is Volos that has taken full advantage.
The newly formed club also enjoyed success in the Greek Cup. They edged Antimachos of Kos 2-0 in the Third Round and qualified for the group stages where they finished in third spot in their group behind AEK and Lamia, and ahead of Apollon Larissa. Only goal difference knocked them out and ironically Lamia went on a giant-killing spree of their own en route to reaching the semifinals.
They have been so dominant in the league that promotion was confirmed with four games to spare. Vasilios Mantzis is the leading scorer in the competition, and Michalis Frangos and Konstantinos Iliopoulos have also made notable contributions. They also boast former Panathinaikos forward Sotiris-Pantelis Pispas and Alexandros Galitsios (the brother of Georgios Galitsios).
Led by 38-year-old Spaniard Juan Ferrando and owned by Georgios Spyridopoulos the club plays out of the Neapoli Municipal Stadium with a capacity of 2500. There is every hope they will be a hit in the Super League.
They will become the third club from the city of Volos to participate in Greece’s top flight after Olympiacos Volos and Niki Volou.
