Olympiacos extended their win streak in the Basket League to 11 games as the Piraeus giants managed a 76-67 defeat of northern rivals Aris at the Peace and Friendship Stadum on Monday night.
Axel Toupane’s impressive 17-point performance led the way for Olympiacos, who were reeling after yet another tough loss in the EuroLeague on Friday against CSKA Moscow.
Briante Weber, who joined the club nearly a month ago, enjoyed his best performance in an Olympiacos shirt as the newest member of the Erythrolefki managed a near double-double with 8 points and 13 assists.
Olympiacos grabbed a lead early on the night as the home side led 21-16 after the first quarter. That lead grew to double digits before halftime as David Blatt’s men used a 27-20 run in the second frame to blow the game wide-open by the interval.
The Erythrolefki, who were riding a five-game losing streak in all competitions heading into Monday’s clash with Aris, continued to surge on the offensive end after halftime and quickly padded their lead to 16 points (65-49) before the end of the third quarter.
Aris managed some damage control in the fourth quarter with an 18-11 run in the final frame, though the Thessaloniki outfit failed to pull any closer than nine points on the scoreboard.
The win means Olympiacos remain one of the most on-form clubs in Greece behind league leaders Panathinaikos, though the club will hope to take some momentum from their domestic and translate it into EuroLeague success.
Aris’ defeat sees the club slip further out of the playoff picture as the Autokratoras now sits two points behind Holargos for the final playoff spot.
Panathinaikos stay perfect
On Sunday, Panathinaikos extended their perfect season to 17 games thanks to a comfortable 87-75 win in Crete over Rethymno Cretan Kings.
Sean Kilpatrick led all Panathinaikos scorers with 22 points while James Gist added a 10-point, 13-rebound double-double as Panathinaikos used dominant first half to clinch the win over one of the Basket League’s relegation favourites.
