Trajkovic makes history for Cyprus
Milan Trajkovic won gold in the men’s 60 metres hurdles at the European Indoor Athletics Championships, becoming Cyprus’ first ever gold medalist in any major competition, while Greece’s Konstantinos Douvalidis finished fifth.
The Serbian-born hurdler finished the race with a time of 7.60 seconds, which was 0.01 seconds faster than France’s Pascal Martinot-Lagarde, who won silver. Bronze went to France’s Aurel Manga, with 7.63 seconds. Greece’s Konstantinos Douvalidis also competed in the final, finishing fifth with a season-best time of 7.65 seconds. Trajkovic’s gold came as a surprise, as the Cypriot finished just fourth in his semifinal.
Trajkovic now becomes Cyprus’ first ever gold medalist in any major competition in the sport. Cyprus previously had two silver medals at the European Indoor Championships, one silver and one bronze at the World Championships (outdoor), and no medals at the European Championships (outdoor) or at the World Indoor Championships.
