Vazaios Wins Two Silvers at European Championships
Greek swimmer Andreas Vazaios won silver medals in the 200m butterfly and 200m individual medley at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Copenhagen.
The 23-year-old and two-time Olympian had previously won bronze in 2015 in the 100m individual medley. This year, he fell short in that event, as he was eliminated in the semifinals and finished 13th overall.
Despite not defending his medal in the 100m individual medley, Vazaios would make up for it in the 200m individual medley, where he won the silver medal and set a new Greek national record with a time of 1:53.27. He would also win silver and set a new national record in the 200m butterfly, with a time of 1:51.23.
Kristian Gkolomeev was a semifinalist in both the 50m and 100m freestyle events. Although he did not qualify for the finals, he set national records in both events. Apostolos Christou also set two national records during these European Championships, in the 50m backstroke (where he was eliminated in the semifinals) and in the 100m backstroke (where he finished 8th in the final).
16-year-old Apostolos Papastamos also traveled to Denmark with the team, as he competed in the 200m backstroke, 200m individual medley, and 400m individual medley. Although he failed to make it to the semifinals in all three events, the young Greek swimmer will have gained valuable experience from competing at such a high level.
