On Sunday afternoon, Volos NFC thrashed struggling Aiginiakos 6:0 at home, consequently sealing their promotion to the Super League.
It’s now official. Following their 6:0 beating of lowly Aiginiakos, Volos NFC have sealed top spot of the 2018/2019 Football League, meaning they’ve earned promotion to the Super League for the first time in their short history. The club was only founded in June 2017, and in the previous season, they were promoted to the Football League from the Gamma Ethniki. Volos are managed by 38-year-old Spanish coach Juan Ferrando.
As expected, Volos breezed past Aiginiakos at their home ground, claiming a landslide 6:0 victory. In the first half, Pitu converted a penalty to give Volos a 1:0 lead, before Vasilis Mantzis netted an impressive hat trick in the second set of 45 minutes. Michalis Frangos also scored twice to complete the route.
Boasting a 10-point lead over nearest challengers Platanias after 26 rounds, Volos cannot be caught in first position, and they will compete in the 2019/2020 Super League. There are four matches remaining in the Football League season, but due to one of Volos NFC’s games being against Aittitos Spata who have already withdrawn from the championship (3:0 walkover victory awarded), Platanias can’t catch them.
In stark contrast, Aiginiakos are stuck in 16th place of the Football League, as they prepare for life in the Gamma Ethniki.
