Vouliagmeni defeat Apollon Smyrnis in decisive game three
Vouliagmeni advanced to the A1 Water Polo League finals after a narrow 8:7 win over Apollon Smyrnis in the decisive game three clash of the semi-final series.
In a thrilling sudden-death game three of the A1 Water Polo League semi-finals, Vouliagmeni celebrated a nail-biting 8:7 victory over Apollon Smyrnis. Vouliagmeni won the best of three series 2:1 and will matchup against Olympiacos in the finals for a fourth consecutive year. Apollon will play Ethnikos Piraeus (swept by Olympiacos in the semi-finals) for third place.
The hosts got off to a fantastic start and took a three-goal lead into the second period. Apollon Smyrnis fought back in the both the second and third periods, cutting Vouliagmeni’s lead by one in each period (2:3, 3;4). With Vouliagmeni ahead 8:7, a goalless final quarter was enough to give the hosts victory, despite Apollon’ efforts to equalize on the final attack of the game.
Game one of the series saw Vouliagmeni march on to a rather easy 8:4 victory, but it was a different story in game two. Apollon, as hosts, put together a tremendous display to take down their opponents in a high-scoring and dramatic match that ended 12:11.
The best of five finals series between Olympiacos and Vouliagmeni will begin on Monday, May 20th. The Reds, who finished first in the regular season, hold home-court advantage. All games will be broadcasted by ERT.
