Warda’s beauty keeps AEK in check at Peristeri
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 23
|Atromitos||1 - 1||AEK|

Atromitos Athens held AEK to a tense 1:1 draw in Peristeri, equalising in the final stages with a wonderful goal from Egyptian wizard Amr Warda.
It looked as though AEK would earn a vital victory against the Super League’s surprise team of the season, but Warda’s moment of brilliance denied the Enosis a potentially vital three points.
In a game of few chances, it was AEK who boasted the majority of the possession and probed for spaces behind the sturdy Atromitos defence. Nevertheless, Atromitos came closest to scoring in a tight first half, as Warda’s deflected free-kick struck the crossbar with AEK goalkeeper Panagiotis Tsintotas glued to the spot.
AEK increased the intensity in the second half, eventually scoring after 68 minutes. Marko Livaja teed up Konstantinos Galanopoulos for a shot, the latter failed to control the ball, but Sergio Araujo was on hand to escape Atromitos stopper Andreas Gianniotis and slot into the gaping net.
The visitors were calmly controlling proceedings, but with only ten minutes remaining, Atromitos equalised with their first meaningful attempt from open play. 24-year old Warda took aim outside the penalty box, curling a gorgeous effort beyond Tsintotas’ flailing dive high into the left corner.
Despite late AEK pressing, Atromitos kept their opponents at bay and held on for a 1:1 draw. AEK stay in second place of the Super League table one point behind PAOK*, while Atromitos occupy fourth position with 43 points.
