Xanthi and Asteras win to set up final day duel
GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 29
|Xanthi||1 - 0||Larissa|
What is turning out to be an epic battle for fifth place and the final European place in the SuperLeague between Xanthi and Asteras Tripolis will go down to the final game of the season after both earned crucial wins on Sunday.
Xanthi were 1-0 home winners against Larissa, while there was late drama in Tripolis as Asteras came from a goal down to complete a stunning 2-1 comeback win over Apollon Smyrnis.
At the Xanthi FC Arena, also known by the locals as “Pigadia”, there was little to choose between the two teams up until the 62nd minute when the visitors has Nikos Golias sent off for picking up two yellow cards.
From then on Xanthi pressed forward at every opportunity and Milan Rastavac’s men were finally rewarded for their efforts with the winning goal Jorge Casado in the 73rd minute.
That win moved Xanthi from 39 to 42 points, and would have clinched them fifth place had it not been for some late heroics from the home side at the Asteras-Apollon match.
|Asteras Tripolis||2 - 1||Apollon Smyrnis|
Apollon had taken a 63rd-minute lead through Stavros Tsoukalas, but Asteras piled on the pressure in the final 10 minutes and two goals within two minutes turned the match completely on its head.
Giannis Kotsiras struck an equaliser in the 81st minute, and then Nikos Kaltsas sparked wild celebrations at the Theodoros Kolokotronis stadium with what proved to be the winning goal two minutes later.
The win means Asteras are level on 42 points with Xanth heading into the final round of matches next weekend.
