GREEK SUPERLEAGUE - MATCHDAY 9

A goal in the 4th minute of stoppage time from Leo Matos gave PAOK the 1-0 victory over AEK in the weekend’s Superleague derby. The goal keeps PAOK well in the hunt for this year’s SuperLeague title as AEK fall further behind.
PAOK hosted AEK in the Superleague’s weekend derby with PAOK hoping to put behind them last week's loss to Olympiacos, while AEK needed at least a point to stay on track near the top of the table. Both sides played conservatively in the first half as neither team took the risk to put men forward. Each side created one good chance in the half, with Leovac’s free-kick denied by Anestis and in stoppage time, Almeida saw his half-volley miss the target.
The pace of the match picked up in the second half as AEK seemed more of a threat to find an opener. The visitors came close in the 74th minute, but Christodoulopoulos’ strike rattled the crossbar and stayed out. In the final 15 minutes, both keepers held their ground to deny Rodrigues (twice) and Mantalos before Sidiropoulos stopped the game due to flares on the pitch. The match was restarted and approached a goalless draw before PAOK was wrongfully awarded a corner in the final minute of stoppage time. Anestis cleared the first cross and the ball went back to Pereyra, who crossed it into the penalty area, Malezas then flicked on the header, which found Leo Matos at the back post and the Brazilian tapped the ball into Anestis’ goal, giving PAOK a thrilling 1-0 victory.
The win moves PAOK to 3rd in the standings with 11 points, tied with AEK. Both teams remain 7 points behind the leaders, Olympiacos, and 3 points behind 2nd placed Panathinaikos. Next weekend, PAOK will have a tricky away fixture against Panionios while AEK hosts an in-form Atromitos side.
