Panathinaikos saw their five-game win streak come to an end on Thursday night after Zalgiris Kaunas pulled off an upset over the Greek Champions with an 80-74 decision at the Zalgirio Arena.
Zalgiris were led by Kevin Pangos, who finished with a double-double consisting of 12 points and 11 assists while teammate Paulius Jankunas led all scorers with 17 points.
Nikos Pappas led the Panathinaikos effort with 16 points, but a rough third quarter in which the Panathinaikos defense were shell-shocked undid any efforts from the Greek guard.
Panathinaikos started strong in Kaunas as Xavi Pascual’s men surged to a 20-10 in the first quarter. Former Panathinaikos player, Sarunas Jasikevicius, did a solid job to refocus his team in the second frame as 21-13 run in the second quarter saw Zalgiris cut the Panathinaikos lead to just two points by halftime.
Zalgiris’ resurgence continued in the third quarter as Panathinaikos returned to their sloppy defensive ways, paving the way for a massive offensive effort from the Lithuanian side. Pangos and Jankunas led the way for Zalgiris in the frame as the Lithuanians posted 33 points to open up a 64-47 lead heading into the final frame.
Panathinaikos made a late effort to claw back, but the task was too tall for the Trifylli despite a 27-16 run for the Athenians to close out the game.
The loss sees Panathinaikos fall to 7-4 on the season and out of the home court advantage spots in the standings for the time being. Zalgiris, meanwhile, are temporarily back in a play-off spot as they move to 6-5 on the season.
Panathinaikos will look to rebound when they return home to host AX Armani Exchange Olimpia Milan next Friday, while Zalgiris travel to Turkey to take on last year’s winners Fenerbahce one day earlier.
