UEFA EURO 2020 QUALIFYING FORMAT

The UEFA EURO 2020 qualifying process, which is a separate competition from the Nations League, is now more streamlined. The format is simple: Ten qualifying groups are formed, WITH five or six teams in each group, and the top two teams from each group will qualify for the final tournament. Twenty teams will qualify via the European qualifiers.

The other four places will be awarded to the UEFA Nations League play-off winners, totaling the 24 teams in the Euro 2020 Final Tournament (there will be no host nation for Euro 2020).

STANDINGS & TIE BREAKERS

The standings are calculated based off a points system used across the soccer world. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. If two or more teams are equal on points, the following criteria are applied (for all confederations group stages) to determine the rankings:

  1. Higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question (i.e. head to head results).

  2. Superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question (i.e. head to head goal difference).

  3. Higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question (i.e head to head goals scored).

  4. Higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question (i.e head to head away goals).

  5. Superior goal difference from ALL group matches played among the teams in question.

  6. Higher number of goals scored from ALL group matches played among the teams in question.

  7. Higher number of away goals scored from ALL group matches played among the teams in question.

  8. Higher number of wins from ALL group matches played among the teams in question.

  9. Higher number of away wins from ALL group matches played among the teams in question.

  10. Lower number of disciplinary points received from ALL group matches played among the teams in question. (1 point for a single yellow card, 3 points for a red card as a consequence of two yellow cards, 3 points for a direct red card, 4 points for a yellow card followed by a direct red card)

  11. Position in the UEFA Nations League overall ranking.
